
Daniel Chein is an independent filmmaker whose work explores transculturalism and expressions of identity in the performative. His short film BASHA MAN examines the impact of tourism on a mountain village in southwest China premiered at CAAMFest2017, where it won the Student Film Award. His feature documentary in development, SONSPLITTER, profiles a German Turk dancer for the internationally renowned Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, tracing his identity and intergenerational trauma through the lens of performance.
Daniel has also collaborated with other filmmakers as an editor on OBJECTOR, CHANGA REVISITED, and THE CHAIRMAN AND THE LIONS; a director of photography on THE CELINE ARCHIVE; an associate producer on BORN TO BE SECOND and MA LIANG’S TIME MACHINE; and co-director/producer on HOODIE.
Daniel is a member of A-Doc and a board member of the Global Lives Project. He received his MFA in Cinema from San Francisco State University, where he has taught undergraduate production courses in filmmaking. Daniel is a 2018 BAVC National Mediamaker Fellow and recipient of the Princess Grace Award in Film. He was selected for the Points North Institute‘s North Star Residency and is a current resident at the SFFILM FilmHouse.
